Stony Run continues meeting for worship at 9:30 and 11:00 on First Days with First Day School from 11:40-12:00. Our Young Friends also continue to be a vibrant group. As we look around Stony Run we see strength in our large number of committed, energized and spiritually diverse members and attenders. Together we find opportunities for spiritual support, challenge and growth, and ways to serve others. Each First Day we have two worship services and additional worship weekly. Our Monthly Meeting for Business is now well attended. We also offer adult forums, four age-graded First Day classes, an active Young Friends program, a welcoming nursery, and a very large number of standing committees, subcommittees and working groups. There’s no lack of times we get together!
Stony Run Friends Meeting is the spiritual home to Friends with a wide array of approaches to belief about the manifestation of Divinity in humankind. While we are united in being drawn to the original vision of George Fox and the seeking of God within, the scaffolding of belief that each person erects above this common ground can range from Christocentric/Abrahamic to Buddhist to Universalism to humanistic concern for social justice. Many of us experience a dynamic tension created by these differences that provides an exciting atmosphere for spiritual development, dialogue and reflection for our members and attenders. An unfortunate set of behaviors can and does sometimes arise out of this tension, however, where those expressing powerfully felt statements of faith feel pressure to not speak their truth for fear of offending those holding to an equally strong but very different faith, or sometimes of offending those who, for the moment at least, are reluctant to hold strongly to any faith system.
The women of Stony Run have volunteered to plan and organize the 2011 BYM Women’s Retreat. Our Committee is already working and you will hear more in the future. Stony Run’s men will hold a retreat on April 16-18 at Camp Catoctin.
Other activities include our Celebration of Membership breakfast, frequent Extended Family activities, our weekly Simple Lunch, and we hosted a meeting of the FGC outreach committee recently.
